THIRD COMBAT CARGO SQUADRON
APO 214 POSTMASTER NEW YORK, N. Y.
“SQUADRON HISTORY”
APRIL 1945
ADMINISTRATION
The month of April started off quietly with the Squadron considerably over strength. This condition continued throughout the month Promotions as of the first of the month per Group SO #25 were as follows:
TO T/Sgt
DiEnidio,
D. A. Farquher, D. S.
TO S/Sgt
Anderson, H. A
McNeilly, D. R.
TO Sgt
Krakower, A.
Lakis, J. S.
Tullo, J. J.
Biggest event of the month was our Squadron move from Tulihal to Hathazari on 7 April. Orchids to the men responsible for the preparation of this move. Tents were up ready to be moved into, baggage already delivered, and the enlisted mens’ mess was in operation for the noon meal. The evening meals were served for officers and EM in their respective, beautifully decorated mess halls with music, linen and soft candlelight. Clubs opened shortly after. In two days we had made an established home of Hathazari, with the occupants of each tent trying to outdo his neighbor.
Lts. Rischawy and Meek were notified of their promotions to 1st Lt. the eight per H s AAF IBT SO #56, which meant free drinks for everybody. S/Sgt Truesdell was welcomed back to the Squadron per Repl Depot #2 SO #71 after a considerable hospitalization period in Calcutta. We were happy for Sgt Duane A. Perkins who transferred per Group Letter to the Port of Debarkation on the 10. The next two days everyone shared the misery of shots, administered in a three (3) in one (1) shot.
Shock and apprehension were the most notable reactions to the death of President Roosevelt, announced on the 13th. The Squadron Historian received word that he was the father of a seven (7) pound and one (1) ounce girl on this date too. Cpl Bishop, E. A. arrived the 14th per Repl Depot #2 SO #76. Our Squadron took great pleasure in celebrating its first anniversary the 15th, and a combined mess served a delicious chicken supper, after which all attended a fine British ENSA show. Transfers of Lts. Coberly and Erwin, Sgt Lallucci and Cpl Reis were rescinded by Group SO #28. The 19th we wished good luck to 1st Lt Bertram D. Siegel transferred to Hos IB, ASC per Group SO #29. Transfer of Capt Basil K. Byrne, another original Squadron member, to 803rd Med Air Evac Sq per Group SO #32 with wishes of good luck took place the 24th. That night Lt Karlock bought the drinks in celebration of a seven (7) and one-half (1/2) pound boy. Last event of the month was the transfer to this Squadron on the 27th of Lts. J. W. Ervin and O. G. Leichliter per Group SO #36 and Repl Depot #2 SO #87 respectively.
Strength changes are shown for the month of April to be slight, with an average existing through the month.
